Research Interests
Dr. Muehling's primary research interests focus on a variety of aspects related to information processing and advertising/communications theory and practice, including imagery, nostalgic advertising themes, social identity, attitude-toward-the-ad, message involvement, and advertising disclaimers. In 1991, his coauthored article with Professor Russell Laczniak and Professor Jeffrey Stoltman, titled "The Moderating Effects of Ad Message Involvement: A Reassessment," received the "Best Article Award" from the Journal of Advertising.  In a 1998 Journal of Advertising study (see Henthorne, LaTour, and Loraas, Journal of Advertising, 1998, Vol. 27, No. 2, 53-63), Prof. Muehling was listed as the most frequent contributor to the 3 leading U.S. academic advertising journals during the period 1989-1996. Most recently, Dr. Muehling received the American Academy of Advertising's "Outstanding Contribution to Research Award" for 2006.

Dr. Muehling has also been quite active as a reviewer for a number of national academic conferences and promotions/advertising textbook publishers, and currently serves on the editorial review boards of Journal of Advertising, Journal of Current Issues & Research in Advertising and Journal of Marketing Communications. In addition, he served as the Vice President of the American Academy of Advertising for the 1997-1998 term, after having served as Chair (for one year) and member (for four years) of the AAA Publications Committee. In 1999, he served the AAA as President-Elect; in 2000 as AAA President, and in 2001 as AAA Past-President.  He has also served as a member of the AAA Membership Committee. He currently is a member of the AAA Finance Committee.

Courses
The courses Dr. Muehling typically teaches include Mktg 477 (Promotion Management) and Mktg 360 (Principles of Marketing). In spring 2009, he was named "Marketing Professor of the Year," as determined by a vote of the marketing students. Dr. Muehling has received similar teaching awards in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1996, 2003, 2004, and 2008.

Marketing 360 (Principles of Marketing) - Summer:
This course is designed to provide students with a broad exposure to the principles of marketing, from both a theoretical and managerial perspective. As an introductory course, its aim is to make students aware of terminology, concepts, and techniques that are part of the world of marketing. 


Marketing 477 (Promotion Management):
Utilizing lecture/discussions, video presentations, and guest speakers, Mktg 477 is designed to introduce students to the theory and practice of promotion management.

Personal Info.

Dr. Muehling has been married for 36 years to his wife, Barbara.  They have four children: Chris (31), Stephanie (29), and Andrea and Angela (24). Dr. Muehling's favorite extra-curricular activities include attending W.S.U. men's and women's sporting events, listening to music, camping, and playing racquetball.
